Canadian Pacific Railway Limited will purchase the railroad that runs trains through many northeast Iowa towns, and has plans to upgrade its tracks and other infrastructure to the tune of $300 million.
Last week, Calgary-based Canadian Pacific announced it will pay $1.5 billion for the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad Corp. with its subsidiary, the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad, pending approval from the Surface Transportation Board. The DM&E, based in Sioux Falls, S.D., has about 1,000 employees, 2,500 miles of track and 7,200 rail cars with 150 locomotives.
