Summary


Canadian Pacific Railway Limited will purchase the railroad that runs trains through many northeast Iowa towns, and has plans to upgrade its tracks and other infrastructure to the tune of $300 million.

Last week, Calgary-based Canadian Pacific announced it will pay $1.5 billion for the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad Corp. with its subsidiary, the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad, pending approval from the Surface Transportation Board. The DM&E, based in Sioux Falls, S.D., has about 1,000 employees, 2,500 miles of track and 7,200 rail cars with 150 locomotives. It has rail lines through Marquette, Guttenberg, Dubuque, Bellevue, Sabula and other area towns.
