Summary
Earthquakes in the Tri-states Iowa has experienced only minor earthquake activity since the U.S. made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The New Madrid earthquakes were the first reported in the state's history, although the absence of historical records prevents an accurate assessment of the effects of those earthquakes. About a dozen earthquakes have occurred in Iowa since the early 1800s. Illinois has experienced the most earthquakes of the three states. The first reported earthquake took place in 1795, but the strongest was in 1909, when the shocks were felt for 500,000 square miles. With more than 30 recorded earthquakes, the state remains an active hotbed of tremors, with the two most recent earthquakes taking place in April 2008 and Feb. 10. Wisconsin has just one recorded earthquake originating from within its borders. In May 1947, an earthquake started just south of Milwaukee and caused minor damage. However, the state is far from immune. More than eight earthquakes centering in areas as far away as Quebec, Canada, could be felt throughout Wisconsin in the past century.
