Education: Art academies of Munich and Vienna Occupation: Painter Immigrated: To Dubuque in 1901, at a friend's suggestion because Dubuque only had one resident artist. Experience: When painting portraits in Dubuque didn't generate enough income to live on, he began painting murals, frescoes and other work for churches. Before his death, he had created work in 185 Catholic churches in the Midwest. His favorite work was to paint landscapes. Honors: His work was exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Anderson Gallery in New York and a gallery in Paris. Family: Wife, Wilhelmina, daughter, Marie, and son, Joseph, all deceased. No direct descendents. A great-nephew, Al Brinkmoeller, whose grandmother was Wilhelmina's sister, lives in Dubuque. Died: Sept. 18, 1946, age 81. His last work, 90 percent completed, was a painting of the grotto of the Blessed Virgin, commissioned by Msgr. Sigwarth of St. Mary Catholic Church.

When Tom Welu was a boy attending Holy Ghost Catholic Church, his eyes sometimes wandered to the paintings, especially the ceiling mural of an angel.
