In the evening, President Lincoln speaks from the White House balcony to a contingent of Maryland supporters. Lincoln addresses a rumor that he aims to "ruin the government." Lincoln remarks, "I am struggling to maintain government, not to overthrow it"I therefore say, that if I shall live, I shall remain President until the fourth of next March; and"whoever shall be constitutionally elected"in November, shall be duly installed as President"In the interval I shall do my utmost"to hold the helm for the next voyage."
