Holding off malware Firefox 3 developers say they increased the security of the latest version of the Web browser, including its ability to avoid malware -- software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system. "While users are surfing, Firefox 3 compares sites they visit to a list of known sites reported to contain malware," said Damon Sicore, Mozilla's director of platform engineering. "The list of malware sites is maintained by a site called stopbadware.org." If Firefox 3 users arrive at a site reported to contain malware, they will see a special warning page that gives them an easy way to avoid loading the page as well as a link to find out why the page has been blocked. "Users often have no way of knowing a page contains malware," Sicore said, "and Firefox 3 definitely does the thinking for the users by protecting them." -- Erik Hogstrom Mozilla Firefox 3 is available now for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X operating systems as a free download from www.getfirefox.com.

Call up a Web page on the recently released Firefox 3 browser, Chris Geyer said, and it appears more quickly than before.
