Report: Firms Fail to Create Many Promised Jobs

MILWAUKEE (AP) - A study of 25 companies that were awarded about $80 million in state subsidies over a six-year period shows about 40 percent of the jobs the firms agreed to create for the money do not yet exist, a newspaper says.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said in a report published Sunday that the state spent nearly $17,000 per new job, 70 percent more than the state's own guideline for an acceptable subsidy.
