Recycling a Key Piece to Water Bottle Problem

States need to figure out a way to keep the zillions of bottles of water we Americans insist on buying out of our landfills. In Iowa, an expansion of the bottle bill is one way to do that. But in pushing for that expansion, some state leaders are breezing right past other possible solutions.

Lt. Gov. Patty Judge spoke last week about a proposal to include juice and water bottles in Iowa's deposit law. The latest plan includes 2 cents per container for redemption centers, instead of just 1 cent. That might be OK, but it no doubt will be an uphill battle in the Legislature. But Judge went on to say this proposal would help curb the "200 million plastic bottles that end up in ditches."
