United's Pension Costs Plummet; Troubled Airline's Pensions Fell 45% in the First Half of the Year

CHICAGO (AP) - United Airlines, while acknowledging its pension and retiree medical costs have decreased dramatically in recent months, said Tuesday that won't keep it from deferring required payments to its pension funds while the company remains in bankruptcy.

The cost of United's pensions fell 45 percent in the first half of the year to $250 million from $455 million in the first half of last year, according to a quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The cost of United's retiree medical programs fell nearly 50 percent to $114 million from $227 million.
