Summary


They are one-thirtieth the width of a human hair and can't be seen by the naked eye. Yet according to the Environmental Protection Agency, their effects are visible everywhere in the form of premature deaths associated with heart and lung disease, chronic respiratory illnesses, infant mortality and low birth weight.

In 2006, the EPA decided that the body of medical evidence pointed clearly enough to "fine particulate matter" in the atmosphere that it cut nearly in half the acceptable level. It also set penalties for noncompliance that could severely hamper economic growth and development in offending communities.
