It's hour four of seven on Dave Giegerich's New Year's Day ride down the snow-packed Heritage Trail, his hands toasting in his attached handlebar covers.

The sun is yawning towards dusk and Giegerich knows his LED lights soon will be needed. He's ridden the slight turn two miles outside of Graf hundreds of times and has never encountered a problem. But on this day, the center trail is set with solid glare ice.
