County supervisors have staved off chaos by agreeing to subsidize inpatient services provided by the Gannon Center for Community Mental Health. But this is a temporary solution to a broad community problem. It will require the attention of several agencies - public and private - to fix it.

No doubt, the Gannon Center is in crisis. The agency has lost dozens of employees (both voluntarily and involuntarily) over the last year and a half. Financial problems led the center to announce it would discontinue inpatient care. That's when the county had to step in. The Gannon Center plays a vital role in this community and taxpayers have a stake in its operation. An audit of the Gannon Center's finances is in order.
