GUTTENBERG, Iowa - After Catholic immigrants clambered up the western shores of the Upper Mississippi River in the 1830s and 1840s, they started parishes in fledgling settlements as soon as manpower, finances and priests were available.

Simple log churches were built first, followed by the construction of schools for their children. St. Mary Parish in Guttenberg was among the first to establish a school.
