MADISON - The tax on hard liquor would go up 50 cents per liter to pay for increasing penalties on drunken driving in Wisconsin under a proposal headed for debate in the state Senate.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the 58 percent tax increase on Tuesday. The higher tax would help pay for a proposal the Assembly unanimously passed last month that would, among other things, make a first drunken-driving offense a crime in Wisconsin if a child is in the car. However, the tax was not included in the Assembly's version of the bill.
