Summary


There are some things that just shouldn't be postponed or put on the back burner for later consideration. Among them is making wills. Although addressing a group of seniors at Thursday's Senior Academy, Jim Trannel, local attorney, emphasized the importance of everyone having a will to make certain that whatever assets you have will be distributed exactly as you choose for your heirs. Without a will, the state may administer your estate.

"There are three legal requirements when making a will. You must be eighteen years old, competent and it must be in writing or typed," he said. Once made, it must be signed by you and witnessed by two disinterested persons. Most are notarized but it is not a requirement. Wills usually name an executor, authorize payment of debts and list distribution of assets according to your directives.
