Usually, when you say folks "missed the boat," you mean they lost an opportunity. The story behind "they missed the boat" for the Dubuque Franciscans is a far different tale.

The sisters of all religious orders (and, now, in a recent expanded local sister exhibit at our Old Jail Museum) have been deservedly getting much praise and recognition for their good works, often after they just stepped off some boat or other from foreign lands in the late 1800s.
