WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon on Wednesday left open the possibility that some foreign fighters captured in Iraq could be declared exempt from the Geneva Conventions' requirement for humane treatment of prisoners.
Larry Di Rita, chief spokesman for Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, told reporters that for now, the U.S. policy is to apply the Geneva Convention protections to every military prisoner and civilian detainee in Iraq.
