Vilsack: Farmers need subsidies DES MOINES -- Subsidies are needed to protect farmers from any drops in crop prices and efforts should be made to redevelop and repopulate rural areas, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says. Subsidies also allow Americans to have affordable food, the former Iowa governor said while in the state for World Food Prize activities. He told The Gazette newspaper in Cedar Rapids that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is working to focus on projects to be a framework for rural redevelopment and repopulation.

MINNEAPOLIS - Republicans might take control of Congress as they ride a wave of voter anger over deficit spending and big government, but experts who follow agriculture say they don't expect deep cuts in subsidies to farmers who grow crops such as corn and soybeans.
