PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - Widely scattered rains dampened some Fourth of July cookouts and fireworks displays, but did little to relieve a lingering drought that still grips most of Illinois, weather officials said Tuesday.

Rain gauges measured up to two inches Monday in parts of central and southern Illinois, but others turned up empty across a state struggling to rebound from the third driest March through June on record.
