CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Operating rooms at the largest hospital in far southern Illinois were nearly empty and emergency rooms fuller than usual Wednesday while doctors took a day off to protest rising malpractice insurance rates.

About 75 percent of the 150 physicians on staff at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale boarded four buses for the Capitol to press the Legislature to do something to bring down insurance prices they say are driving their ranks out of the state.
