Iraqis went to the polls Sunday, despite the very real threat that they could be killed. Millions of them, young and old, children in tow. They showed amazing courage. In a war that has brought little good news from inside Iraq, Sunday was a historic day.

Though organizers said it would be days before voter turnout was known, early estimates indicate it will likely be higher than the 57 percent, or 8 million, predicted.
