Court Rules Against Sex Offender

DES MOINES - The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday ruled that even though a sex offender was still in prison when he should have been released, a hearing to commit him indefinitely as a sexually violent predator can move forward.

The case involves 33-year-old Galen Shaffer, who was convicted in 1995 in Black Hawk County of sexual abuse and was serving 25 years at the state penitentiary in Anamosa in eastern Iowa.
