An Illinois tax checkoff that lets residents help National Guard members and reservists pay their bills is being touted as a model for other states.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed the Military Family Relief Fund into law in February 2003. It enables taxpayers to voluntarily donate to the fund. To date, more than $2.7 million has been distributed to more than 5,000 Illinois families.
