Summary
mud lake love story Jimmy and DeVon Welty, of Peosta, Iowa, can trace the beginnings of their relationship back to a Pickers Picnic at one of the very first Mud Lake Bluegrass Sundays, which started 10 years ago. "I've been coming here since it started and I met DeVon here right about then," Jimmy Welty said. "She was learning to play the guitar and I said, 'I'll help you out with your guitar playing.'" The pair continued to see each other at Mud Lake Bluegrass Sundays throughout the summer, and eventually DeVon asked Jimmy to teach her how to sing. "We're still working on that part," DeVon Welty said, laughing. With Jimmy on the stand-up bass and DeVon on the mandolin, their band, free4thehaulin, was the opening act for the July 24 edition of Mud Lake Blue Grass Sundays. "Music is what makes it all fun. We have a love of music, and this just brings it out," DeVon Welty said. Other members of the band include Jimmy's cousin, Jay Roussel, of Durango, Mark Oberfoell, of Dubuque, and Bill George, of Dyersville. The free4thehaulin band is all- acoustic, featuring country and bluegrass music. The band plays at various venues throughout the year. "With just acoustic instruments, you can play underneath a shade tree or on a stage, it doesn't matter," Jimmy Welty said.Sprawled out on blankets or sitting on lawn chairs, people of all ages gathered in the sun and under the shade along the Mississippi River to hear the sounds of mandolins, guitars and stand-up basses.
