This year my wife and I decided not to drive, but take Amtrak to visit our family in Oregon. The sleeping car amenities included complimentary meals, route guides, turndown service and morning newspapers.

However, we did miss out on the afternoon wine and cheese party because of a freight train wreck. This five-hour detour was mainly through Glacier Park, so the scenery made up for the inconvenience.
