BELLEVUE, Iowa - A woman was killed and at least 23 people, including 13 children, were hospitalized by runaway horses hitched to a carriage that stampeded through the crowd during the annual Heritage Days parade Sunday morning.

Nine of those who were hospitalized sustained either critical or serious injuries, and dozens of others in the path of the roughly six-block stampede sustained minor injuries.

Janet Steines, 60, of Spragueville, died Sunday, according to the Hachmann Funeral Home. Steines, who was airlifted from a local hospital, was pronounced dead at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, according to the Bellevue Police Department.
