A Pennsylvania plant's loss will be a work-force gain for Dubuque - at least temporarily - as the parent company of Barnstead International moves to consolidate operations.

Laboratory-equipment maker Fisher Scientific Inc., which this year acquired Barnstead's former parent Apogent Technologies in a $4 million purchase, confirmed on Monday that it will close its Indiana, Pa., manufacturing plant in 2005. The Pennsylvania factory, about 45 miles east of Pittsburgh, employs more than 100 people.
