Balancing Act a Taxing Situation?

Summary


In the half-light of a large conference room at Dubuque's Grand River Center on a cool Wednesday morning, Rep. Bruce Braley, D- Iowa, practiced the fine art of table hopping, all the while working to reduce the federal budget deficit. Knees touching the bottom edges of white tablecloths, approximately 110 area residents gathered around 15 round tables to discuss what, in their opinion, Braley should do to balance the federal budget.

Third in a series of four gatherings throughout the 1st Congressional District, the meetings were designed and set up by a nonpartisan group out of Washington, D.C., called the Concord Coalition. The coalition "champions fiscal responsibility and realistic long-range planning," and one of the ways it attempts to do so is to engage citizens across the country, citizens of all political backgrounds and walks of life, and to seek their input on the issue of the federal budget. The deficit exceeds $1.5 trillion and the federal debt exceeds $14 trillion.
