Summary


THOMSON, Ill. - Before the government invested hundreds of millions of dollars, promised hundreds of jobs and later sparked a controversy of international proportions, Thomson was happy being known as the Melon Capital of the World.

All that changed a half-year ago, when President Barack Obama chose Thomson's state prison, which is nearly empty, to become a federal facility housing, among others, some terror suspects currently detained in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
