SPRINGFIELD - The decision to reduce payments to government pension plans will cost Illinois taxpayers about $7 billion over the next 40 years, according to a newspaper analysis of figures from state retirement systems.

The cost is far less than the $30 billion some critics had predicted, but it's still more than the Blagojevich administration acknowledges. The governor maintains Illinois will end up saving billions through new limits on future pension benefits that were approved this year.
