This Iowa legislative session, lawmakers may vote on a fair- share proposal, which addresses the issue of public- and private- sector employees who are not union members paying for representation services in workplaces covered by union contracts.

Union members pay dues to cover the costs associated with securing and maintaining collectively bargained contracts with employers. As a so-called "right-to-work" state, however, Iowa law prohibits unions from negotiating a fair-share fees clause for nonmembers in unionized workplaces.
