Chet Culver has moved quickly to deal with questionable spending and accounting in Iowa's moviemaking tax credit program, but the issue clearly will linger and could become a headache for the governor as he gears up for his re-election bid next year. House Votes to Extend Unemployment Benefits

WASHINGTON - Jobless workers in imminent danger of losing their unemployment benefits would get a 13-week reprieve under legislation approved by the House on Tuesday. The House bill, which applies to 27 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico with unemployment rates of 8.5 percent or higher, would add to the already-record levels of benefits that have been available to the jobless as the country struggles to recover from its prolonged economic malaise.

4 People Try to Make Off with Chili's Pepper Sign

BENNINGTON, Vt. - A giant chili pepper on the roof of a Chili's restaurant in southern Vermont was a hot property - police say four people have been caught trying to steal it. Bennington police said the group ran 470 feet of extension cord across a four-lane road and through a Home Depot parking lot to power an electric drill used to detach the logo sign.

'Smart City' in National Spotlight

As the first city in the nation poised to become an IBM Smarter City, Dubuque has been grabbing more than its usual share of national media attention lately. Randy Gehl, public information officer for the city, has been tracking the coverage since last week's announcement about the Smarter Sustainable Dubuque partnership. He said a second wave of sustainability-related Web sites, forums and blogs have picked up the story in recent days.

Rain Breaks a 24-Day Dry Spell

Tuesday's rain broke a 24-day dry spell - Dubuque's 15th- longest rain-free period in 113 years of records. The city received 1.31 inches of rain in the six hours ending at 7 a.m. Dubuque's record dry spell lasted 54 days and ended on Nov. 15, 1952.

Apple River Woman Injured in Car Accident

STOCKTON, Ill. - An Apple River woman was injured in a car accident early Sunday near Stockton. Megan J. Roberts, 20, was transported to the Freeport Memorial Hospital. Hospital officials refuse to disclose patient condition reports.
