Platteville, Wis. All-Veterans Parade Scheduled for Sunday

An all-veterans parade is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, July 12, in Platteville to commemorate the Vietnam Moving Wall displayed at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville today through July 13. The parade begins on lower Main Street at the Mining &; Jamison museums.

In response to Michael Kelly's column, "Usurping Democracy hardly a 'simple' act" (June 28): Mr. Kelly maintains that the Jo Daviess Board of Supervisors decision to refuse the voter-approved 1 percent school tax is undemocratic. In a strict sense, that is true. The board denied an action that was fairly shown to be preferred by most voters. But Mr. Kelly's objections are based on the misconception that America is a democracy. It is not.

Storm-Warning System to Aid Clayton County

A new early warning system designed to better track storms moving through the area is being installed in several Clayton County fire stations. Clayton County Emergency Management Director Joel Biggs said that the Precision Weather Station system is now fully operational in Volga, and will soon be up and running in Postville, Strawberry Point and Monona, with all four stations interlinked.

Hempstead Project Takes Safe Route

Nearly two years after a motorist struck and killed a student, Hempstead High School officials continue work to make the surrounding streets safe. On July 21, the school, in conjunction with the city, will begin Phase II of an extensive construction project on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Department Accepts Bids for E.B. Lyons Addition

Dubuque's Leisure Services Department is accepting bids for the construction of the 7,400-square-foot addition to the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center. The Friends of the Mines of Spain recently wrapped up a three- year fundraising campaign for the addition, hitting its goal of $1.5 million from grants, city, county, state and federal funds and donations from local businesses, civic groups and the public.
