Ball or Bone? Big Dogs of Politics Go to Extremes

Rox and Riley, 7- and 1-year-old golden retrievers, are on the floor at my feet having a disagreement over executive compensation. Top dog Rox wants both the ball and the bone. But having only one set of jaws to chew on two objects presents a problem. So Rox chooses while Riley salivates over the one he can't have. It has not crossed their Darwinian minds that they might cooperate.

Letters to the Editor

The big "C." Cancer. Memorial Day weekend reminds us of loved ones lost, and of the dreadful nature of this disease. Now meet Francis, my 87-year-old auntie. Let her story remind those struggling with cancer that life is hope, that cancer can be defeated.

(More than three times the rate in that age range recorded in the 1980s.) Nearly 14 percent of American adolescents are overweight. This is a pattern emerging in all of the developed and developing nations of the world. One discouraging but simple fact is that healthy food is expensive and junk food is cheap. Our co...

Swiss Valley Building's 'Cows' Come Home

QUESTION: Every time I drive by on U.S. 52 north toward Dubuque with my daughter, who is 3 years old, we pass the Swiss Valley Milk Company. She would always tell me to look at the momma and baby cow on the roof. We recently passed the building and she asked me where the cows went because they were missing. I had to come up with an answer, so I said they went inside to sleep. It has been about a month since she first noticed they were gone. Why were the cows taken down, where are they and are...

First Lady Joins Push for Nominee

WASHINGTON - The White House dispatched first lady Michelle Obama to defend Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor on Wednesday, part of a broad offensive to humanize the judge that came as former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich backed off his harsh criticism of her as a racist. Obama told students at a high school graduation that Sotomayor is "more than ready" to be a justice and compared the judge's life story of humble beginnings and high achievement to the paths taken by her husband and he...
