The Northeast Iowa School of Music will entertain shoppers at Kennedy Mall with the Fourth Annual Plaython, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The event is a public recital for which students, in the preceding weeks, students will be collecting sponsorships.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Department of Performing and Visual Arts and the Pioneer Players will perform the surrealist comedy "Dead Man's Cell Phone," by Sarah Ruhl. A pay-what-you-can preview performance will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11. Tickets are $7 general and $5 for seniors and students younger than 18 for performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday- Saturday, Nov. 12-14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15.

Herb Caen, the Greatest Columnist

Military Tragedy Unfathomable

where we stand Those who stood ready to serve were cut down in a senseless act of violence. Families of military personnel live every day with the burden of knowing that their loved one could lose his or her life in the line of duty. That is the potential sacrifice that comes with the territory. Death in the name of fighting for one's country, for freedom and liberty, is an honorable and worthwhile legacy.

Tanner to Speak at Veterans Day Observance

Vietnam veteran Gregory E. Tanner, of Platteville, Wis., will be the featured speaker at the American Legion Post 6-sponsored Veterans Day observance at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Washington Square in Dubuque. Tanner served on active duty from 1969 to 1979 with the U.S. Navy. He served with the Navy's Submarine Service UDT (Underwater Demolition Team) 34, Special Operations Group. During that time, he did two tours of duty in Vietnam.

Poopsie's Among Nation's Top Sellers of Game

A small Galena specialty store is one of the nation's top sellers of a family game called Ruckus, outselling much larger retailers across the country, according to Dan Levy, president of game company Funstreet Inc. Poopsie's is in the top 5 percent of the 1,500 stores selling the game nationwide, including Toys "R" Us, Target, FAO Schwarz and Nordstrom, Levy said in a statement released by the store.

Peosta and Calmar, Iowa Nicc Honors Nontraditional Students

In recognition of National Nontraditional Students Week, Nov. 2- 6, Northeast Iowa Community College honored nontraditional students enrolled at the Calmar and Peosta campuses. This fall semester, 70 percent of incoming freshmen were first- generation college students, and more than one-third of NICC's student population is older than 26. Students who are 25 years of age or older are defined as nontraditional students.

Legislator From Des Moines Praises Dubuque

Iowa Rep. Wayne Ford, D-Des Moines, spent two days in Dubuque last week meeting with work-force development and city officials about ways to improve the state's job-training and work-force development programs. Ford said Dubuque's public/private partnership strategy needs to be emulated elsewhere. He said he'll take some things he learned back to Des Moines.
