Annual Maquoketa Golf Event Planned for May 22

The third annual "Rockin' on the River" music festival is set for four dates this summer at Riverview Park. The first event will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 26, and will feature music from Dean and Sparney, and The Mayflies. Free hot dogs will be provided by the city.

Citizens Express Vision 2020 Opinions
Wednesday night, five meetings in the city wards asked residents to express their opinions about five scenarios. The Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce and Iowa State University have been working on a Vision 2020 for the community. The turnout was fairly low with 10 or 11 people in a couple of the wards, 20 in one and 30 in the 5th Ward.
Maquoketa School Notifies About Whooping Cough
Maquoketa Community School parents received a letter last week about a possible whooping cough case in the elementary school. Ann Otteman, Jackson County Home and Community Health Department manager, said a Maquoketa elementary student came down with symptoms of pertussis, or whooping cough, which is very contagious.
Bradley Wins Dental Association Award
A Cascade dentist has received the Outstanding Service Award from the Iowa Dental Association. Dr. Steven Bradley was presented the award last weekend at the IDA annual session in Des Moines. "We are pleased to present Dr. Bradley with the Outstanding Service Award this year," said Dr. David Davidson, immediate past- president of the Iowa Dental Association. "His career of service stands tall as a shining example every Iowa dentist should strive to achieve."
Hanover Students Win Awards for History Videos
Students from River Ridge High School in Hanover won two State Superior awards earlier this month at the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency's Illinois History Expo. Students traveled to Springfield and entered three projects. The State Superior award is the highest history award in the state.
Garnavillo Preschool Program at School Will Close
The Clayton Ridge School Board has voted to close the 4-year-old preschool program at the Garnavillo Middle School due to declining enrollment. Five students have registered for next year, and those children will be transported to the Guttenberg preschool facility. Board members also approved a new one-year expended AEA technology service agreement for two days a week at a cost of $23,296. The agreement allows AEA personnel to fix and update the school's computer systems.
Edgewood City Renews Stormready Designation
Officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service have recognized Edgewood for its recent renewal to the StormReady program. Edgewood first became designated as StormReady in 2003, but has renewed its designation three times now. In upstate New York last month for a nephew's wedding, I took a sidetrip to Cooperstown for my first visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I paid special attention to how the Hall treated the subjects of my two books - Dubuque County native Red Faber and Red's friend and Chicago White Sox teammate, Ray Schalk. I can't complain. (However, I later notified the folks at the Hall that Red's middle name is incorrect on one exhibit, and they said they'd correct it.)
Platteville Hydrant Flushing, Spring Cleanup Set
Platteville will have a citywide hydrant flushing beginning at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, May 20, and Monday, May 21. Residents may experience isolated cases of discolored water on both days and should postpone doing laundry if this condition is present. They are urged to flush their building and home water systems.
